The State of Marriage

So I watched an episode of Grey's Anatomy the other day and it really bothered me.  This was the "White Wedding" episode where Callie and Arizona are planning to get married.  This aspect of the show has really bothered me (not that there aren't other aspects that should bother a person too) as they are a same sex couple.  However, this episode really bothered me in the flippant way it talked about marriage and God.  Below are the 2 segments that I am referring to.  The first is a discussion between Callie and her mom and the second is Bailey's reponse.

I think what bothers me most about this is the way Callie's mom and the church are made out to be the bad guys.  Now, Callie's mom could have phrased it or possibly handled it differently but essentially she took a stance for what is right and yet she is the one who is "wrong".  Bailey said, " the church has not caught up to God yet".  I have to say that this line is the part that really gets me.  Hollywood has glamorized immoral living and is suggesting that those people who believe in certain morals are wrong and living in the dark ages.  What is morally okay?  Where is the line? Is there no area where we can take a stance and be respected for our beliefs instead of looked upon as ignorant or intolerable?

Just some of my thoughts....I so often have a hard time getting what I feel about something into words...this post might be a work in progress...

I watched the same episode, Jeanine, and had some of the same thoughts... though the phrase that the church hasn't caught up with God yet hit me in a different way - I sort of agreed. I think churches often get caught up in creating an image. And, in the process of creating that image, those who are on the periphery are left in the dust. The statement, in isolation is up for much discussion along these lines, however Baily probably meant it more as an insult in that the church needed to somehow embrace what was happening in society.

I sometimes wonder what Jesus would do with our churches if He were to walk in. I mean, I know He is there... but I mean the flesh and blood guy who turned tables in the temple... what would He have to say? Where would He sit? Would He be frustrated that we've turned it into a "show" of sorts with entertaining music, nicely dressed folks, a fuzzy bag that we pass around for offering, a dynamic speaker that is meant to convey a message that pleases the people to at least some degree.

Ah, but I digress. I don't agree with same sex marriages though am faced with this situation within my family. Knowing what I believe about it all is one thing, but figuring out the best, most godly way to respond is quite another. It is even harder when they are professing Christians!!!

Maybe the church does need to catch up in knowing how to better respond to people who are living the lie that these sins are okay and acceptable. It is not up to us to convict, that is up to the Holy Spirit... but wisdom must be had to speak lives into these lives... and into our own.

A very interesting episode indeed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.
